This Week's Top AI & Tech News and Trends
(Through August 4, 2024)

Create an AI Character Based on Your Interests. Meta

Meta Launches AI Studio, Empowering U.S. Creators to Build Custom Chatbots

Meta has launched AI Studio, a new platform that allows U.S. users to easily create, share, and discover custom AI chatbots without any technical skills. Available across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and the web, AI Studio enables creators to build personalized AI characters that can entertain, advise, and engage their audiences. These AI bots can be tailored with unique names, personalities, and avatars, and are designed to enhance fan interactions by quickly responding to questions and sharing content. Meta ensures transparency by clearly labeling AI responses and offers creators full control over their AI’s interactions, paving the way for broader AI adoption in digital engagement. Source: Meta

The End of Predictive AI and the Next Frontier

The era where AI primarily focuses on predictive tasks is coming to an end. Companies like OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic are pushing for AI models that not only generate text and images but also build upon each other to tackle increasingly complex problems. The next big leap involves AI self-improvement and error-checking, promising significant advancements in AI capabilities. Source: The New Atlantis

OpenAI Rolls Out Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT Plus Users

OpenAI is introducing Advanced Voice Mode to a select group of ChatGPT Plus users, enabling real-time, emotionally responsive conversations. This feature, which will expand to all Plus users by fall, allows natural interactions with AI, mimicking human speech patterns, including the ability to detect and respond to emotional cues. Initially, the mode is limited to four preset voices, with plans for video and screen sharing to be added later. Safety measures include extensive testing with over 100 external red teamers across 45 languages to ensure the feature blocks violent or copyrighted content. A detailed report on the capabilities and safety of GPT-4o is set to be released in early August. Source: Ars Technica

AI Wins Silver at Global Math Olympiad

Researchers have developed breakthrough AI systems, AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2, that achieved a silver-medal level performance at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). These systems, which employ reinforcement learning and advanced mathematical reasoning, solved four out of six complex problems, including the hardest one. AlphaProof uses a formal approach to reasoning, while AlphaGeometry 2 is a neuro-symbolic system optimized for geometry. This marks a significant advancement in AI's ability to tackle challenging mathematical problems, indicating a future where AI assists mathematicians in discovering new insights and solving long-standing problems. AI v The Mind: Can AI tell better jokes than a human?

A Comedian Tests AI-Generated Jokes on Stage

A recent experiment tested whether AI could deliver a genuinely funny stand-up comedy routine. Comedian Karen Hobbs performed a set written entirely by OpenAI's ChatGPT in front of a live audience. While the AI-generated jokes relied heavily on clichés and struggled with comedic timing, the experiment revealed AI's current limitations in understanding and delivering humor. Despite these challenges, experts believe that AI's ability to create humor will improve, potentially leading to AI-generated comedy that rivals human wit in the near future. Source: BBC

UK Hospitals Begin Live Trial of AI for Prostate Cancer Detection

Three major hospitals in England have launched a live clinical trial, named ARTICULATE PRO, to evaluate AI technology for prostate cancer detection and grading. Led by the University of Oxford in partnership with AI company Paige, the trial integrates the Paige Prostate Suite into standard care at North Bristol Trust Southmead Hospital, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, and Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust. The AI is designed to assist pathologists in detecting and grading tumors, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and improve the accuracy and efficiency of prostate cancer diagnosis. The trial is supported by the UK’s Accelerated Access Collaborative under the Department of Health and Social Care. If successful, this could lead to wider adoption of AI in cancer diagnostics across the UK and beyond. Source: AI News

How to assess a general-purpose AI model’s reliability before it’s deployed

MIT researchers have developed a new technique to assess the reliability of large foundation AI models before deployment. This method evaluates the consistency of representations across an ensemble of similar models when analyzing the same test data point. By comparing these abstract representations, the technique helps users determine which model is best suited for their specific task without needing real-world testing, which is especially useful in privacy-sensitive fields like healthcare. This approach promises more accurate and reliable AI deployment but requires the computationally expensive training of multiple models. The work, which shows promise in improving AI model reliability, is set to be presented at the Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence. Source: MIT News
