Yann LeCun’s AMI Raises $1.03B to Pursue Alternative AI Architecture

Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), a startup founded by former Meta chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, has raised $1.03 billion at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation to develop AI systems based on reasoning, planning, and “world models.” The company aims to build systems capable of understanding and interacting with complex real-world environments—an approach LeCun argues is necessary because current large language models, which predict the next word or pixel, cannot achieve human-level intelligence on their own.

Researchers have launched the Human Organ Atlas (HOA), an online platform that allows scientists, doctors, and the public to explore detailed 3D maps of real human organs down to the cellular level. The database currently includes 307 datasets across 56 organs from 25 donors, enabling users to navigate organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, and kidneys directly through a web browser. Scientists describe the system as a “Google Earth for human organs,” offering an unprecedented way to visualize anatomy in full three-dimensional hierarchy.

The atlas was built using Hierarchical Phase-Contrast Tomography (HiP-CT), a powerful imaging technique developed at the European Synchrotron that uses light up to 100 billion times brighter than conventional hospital CT scanners. The e-commerce giant claims Perplexity’s AI shopping agent failed to clearly disclose when it was acting on behalf of a human user and continued interacting with Amazon’s platform despite requests to stop.

Google Reimagines Maps with Gemini-Powered Conversational Navigation

Google has unveiled a major update to Google Maps powered by its Gemini AI models, introducing “Ask Maps,” a conversational feature that lets users ask complex, real-world questions about places and routes. Instead of manually searching through reviews and listings, users can now ask questions like where to charge a phone nearby or find a late-night tennis court, and receive personalized results based on Maps’ database of 300+ million places and contributions from more than 500 million users.

The update also introduces Immersive Navigation, the biggest upgrade to Maps’ driving experience in over a decade. Using Gemini to analyze Street View and aerial imagery, Maps now generates a vivid 3D navigation environment that highlights lane changes, traffic lights, terrain, and buildings along the route.
