Geoffrey Hinton's Urgent Warning

Unlike humans, AI systems can create countless copies of themselves, all learning different tasks simultaneously and then pooling their knowledge into a cohesive whole. Beyond the risk of AI surpassing human intelligence, Hinton is also worried about the increasing militarization of AI. Current AI legislation, even in places like Europe, tends to exclude military applications. This loophole concerns Hinton, especially with the potential for AI-powered autonomous weapons that can make life-and-death decisions independently. He compares the situation to the Manhattan Project, noting that international agreements might be necessary to prevent misuse, similar to the regulation of chemical weapons. However, he fears that it may take a significant tragedy before effective agreements are established.
